Christiania Glass House

I find this building extremely compelling. I stumbled on it a while back and return every once in a while to check it out. It is part of the Freetown Christiania, an autonomous favela in Copenhagen. If you haven't heard of Freetown Christiania before, there is an interesting entry on Wikipedia about it.

  1. Interesting why you use the word favela to describe Christiania. In a sense, if we are talking about "outsiders,"then i can see what you are getting at. But in other senses it is not a good description.

  2. Good point. I was actually using the language from John's post on Superuse.org. which I thought fitting - although I have never been to Christiania.

I guess I see the connection in that it is autonomous, cobbled together outside of the normal building codes on land not owned or paid for by the occupants. Then there is also the less important connection with illicit drugs.

I see how it differs from the Brazilian favelas in that it was initiated as more of a Utopian ideal/alternative society rather than out of desperation for housing.
