Shaving in Style with the Merkur Safty Razor

Last spring, around father's day, I dropped a not so subtle hint that a Merkur razor would be a really nice gift. Well, a couple of weeks ago, for my birthday, Julia gave me my new shaving kit and I love it. I am now shaving in style. It doesn't clog, there is no plastic involved anywhere, and the blades are 50 cents each.

I have only shaved a few times with the new set up but I can say this: it is not fool proof. It takes a little care to use this razor without injury but it is easy, you just need to pay attention to what you are doing. I am so happy to be off the expensive cartridge habit I could sing. Thank you Julia!

  1. Good Job! If you look on ebay you can find glass blade sharpeners for that style of razor, and with little effort drop the per shave price even more.

  4. Thanks for the tips!

Mantic59 - I realized after watching your videos that I wasn't building up my lather enough. Thanks for posting those. I am eager to see how it goes if I do it right considering it went so well with inferior lather.

  5. Perfect timing. I've been unsure as to which razor to get my husband and you just made my decision for me. It's good to get an insider's view. Thank you, thank you!

  6. Try some different blades in that puppy. Check out westcoastshaving.com or razorandbrush.com for sampler packs. I've found my face responds much better to blades than the Merkurs (which I assume you're using). Feathers are my favorite but they are SHARP!

  7. Thanks for the tip Matt! I just got through the box of merkur blades and am now re-sharpening them to see how much life I can squeeze out of 'em.

My next package will be a box of Feathers!
