A few native California Cherry trees that were growing here when we bought our house. This year two of them produced an abundance of fruit - beautiful black cherries.
The only problem with them is that they are mostly pit and what there is of the flesh is a combination of sweet and bitter that isn't really worth the effort .
On the positive side, they are beautiful and some birds seem to like them.

Cherries need quite a few hours of cold, you might try putting ice at the trees base for a few days in a row during the cold part of our short winter hear is socal. Isn’t it great living hear where we have a 300 plus day growing season.
ReplyDeleteOooh! Been wanting to go cherry picking this year. I hope I get some time off to do it.
ReplyDeleteThe Chumash used to eat the pit. It needs special preparation to remove poisons. I've made it before. I boiled the kernels from the green cherries in 4 changes of water. The water needs to be poured off after it boils for a little bit.
